Konstruct is an arts based, music and performance project comprising myself, and two other musicians, Phonsonic and Simon McCorry. Three (squared) is the second album to be released from this project and was originally released on audio cassette by the boutique, UK based label, Rusted Tone Recordings.

Following the start of social restrictions last year, we found ourselves considering new ways to collaborate that would circumvent the barriers placed upon everyone at the time.

I liked the idea of exchanging files which took into account the fact that there were three of us. It was also a great way to explore restrictions which in turn would hopefully lead to a different sound palette. The rules were quite simple, we each would record three short audio files, keep one, and pass the other two on. Therefore, we each ended up with a file from each of us and would use that to construct a track. We would do that nine times (3 x 3) resulting in a total of 27 files (3 x 3 x 3), each time using a different set of audio files. One of the main rules however, was to use whatever treatments and manipulations we liked once we had those files. That’s where the creativity came in and some sounds changed dramatically and some less so.

Originally devised as a form of sonic and compositional experiment, this formula quickly became the defining factor and inspiration for driving the project forward and the resulting nine pieces are both diverse and yet inhabit their own cohesive sound world.

Three (squared) is full of surprises. At times, partly cinematic with a beautiful and open, neo-classical sound and at others, wonderfully introspective and melancholic.
